Local municipal courts throughout Essex County typically handle traffic and parking summonses, most minor criminal matters, and borough or township ordinance violations. More serious offenses involving jail exposure greater than six months are initially processed in the local municipal court before being turned over to the Essex County Prosecutor and sent to the Essex County Superior Court in Newark, NJ. Essex County Superior Court is the largest and busiest trial court in New Jersey. The Essex County Superior Court handles all indictable felony charges. The court offers a Drug Court Program, which may allow you to stay out of jail and go to a rehabilitation facility as opposed to prison. The court also has a pre-indictment program, which allows for pre-trial conferences that can avoid a trial altogether.

Directions to the Essex County Superior Court

From NJ Turnpike:

Take exit 15W for I-280 toward Newark/Kearny. Keep left at the fork and merge onto I-280 West. Continue for five miles, then take exit 12A-12B for Green State Oraton Parkway toward Clinton Street/East Orange. Take exit 12B on the left for Oraton Parkway. Merge onto Garden State Parkway and continue for nine miles. Take exit 155P on the left to merge onto NJ-19 North toward I-80/Paterson. Continue for approximately two miles, then turn left onto Cianci Street. Turn left onto Market Street.

From I-80 Westbound:

Take exit 57A-57B for NJ-19 South toward Downtown/Paterson/Clifton. Keep right at the fork and merge onto NJ-19 North. Continue for half a mile, then turn left onto Cianci Street. Turn left onto Market Street.

From Garden State Parkway:

Take exit 155P to merge onto NJ-19 North toward I-80 Paterson. Continue for approximately two miles, then turn left onto Cianci Street. Turn left onto Market Street.
