How Criminal Charges are Handled in Bergen County, NJ
Local municipal courts throughout Bergen County typically handle traffic and parking summonses, most minor criminal matters (known as disorderly persons offenses), and borough or township ordinance violations.
More serious offenses involving jail exposure greater than six months are initially processed in local municipal court before being turned over to the Bergen County Prosecutor and sent to Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ for handling.
The Bergen County Superior Court handles all
indictable felony charges. The court offers a Drug Court program, which may allow you to stay out of jail and participate in a rehabilitation program instead of serving prison time. The court also has a pre-indictment program, which allows for pre-trial conferences that can lead to avoiding trial altogether.

Directions to Bergen County Superior Court
From I-80 Eastbound:
Take Exit 66 (Hudson Street).
From the exit ramp turn left onto Vreeland Avenue.
From Vreeland Avenue, turn left onto Hudson Street.
Justice Center is approximately ¾ mile up, straight ahead.
From Garden State Parkway:
Take Exit 159 to I-80 East, then proceed as above.
From New Jersey Turnpike:
Take Turnpike North to its northern terminus.
Follow signs for Route 46 West (Hackensack).
Follow Route 46 West past two traffic lights and across a bridge over the Hackensack River.
Just past the bridge, bear right at the first fork onto River Street.
From River Street, turn left onto Court Street (approximately 1½ miles from Route 46), where the Visitor Parking is located.
Justice Center is west of the parking area.
From Route 4:
Use Hackensack Avenue exit, towards Hackensack.
Hackensack Avenue becomes River Street in Hackensack.
From River Street, turn right onto Court Street (approximately 1¾ miles from Route 4) where the Visitor Parking is located.
Justice Center is west of the parking area.
