Police arrested a man who allegedly assaulted a worker at a QuickChek store located in Totowa, New Jersey.
According to law enforcement, the incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. at the QuickChek on Union Boulevard in Totowa, NJ. The suspect allegedly walked into the building and approached a female employee. He then allegedly punched her in the face, knocked her to the ground, and slashed her with a knife.
Authorities later indicated that the blade used in the attack was a box-cutter utility knife.
Totowa police officers were called to the scene shortly after the attack. When police officers arrived at the convenience store, they found the victim lying on the ground and suffering from cuts to her face, head, and fingers.
The victim was briefly treated at the scene by members of the Totowa First Aid Squad and then rushed to St. Joseph s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, NJ, where she received medical treatment.
Investigators spoke with the victim and learned that the suspect was actually a regular customer at the store. Police also believe that the 34-year-old suspect may have applied for work at the store a few years ago.
The suspect was later tracked down at his apartment in Woodland Park, New Jersey. The suspect was placed under arrest without incident. He has been charged with several crimes, including attempted murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
If the suspect is ultimately convicted on the aggravated assault charges, he faces severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), anyone who causes bodily injury with a deadly weapon such as a knife or handgun can be charged with a second degree felony. A conviction for second degree aggravated assault could lead to a sentence of 5-10 years in NJ State Prison.
After being placed under arrest and processed, the suspect was taken to the Passaic County Jail in Paterson, New Jersey. He was being held at the correctional facility on a massive $750K bail amount.
