A Prospect Park NJ man reportedly shot himself with a handgun in Paterson, New Jersey. To add insult to injury, the suspect is now looking at prison time because he has been accused of illegally possessing the handgun.
The suspect is a 22-year-old resident of Prospect Park, New Jersey. According to Passaic County prosecutors, the suspect shot himself in the hand with his own gun.
The suspect then went to the trauma center at St. Joseph s Regional Medical Center in Paterson so that he could get medical treatment for his gunshot wound.
Workers at the Paterson NJ hospital notified local law enforcement, which dispatched police officers to the medical facility. Paterson NJ cops then spoke with the suspect, who allegedly lied and said that someone else had shot him in the hand.
Paterson detectives investigated the suspect s story and soon determined that he may have shot himself with an illegally owned firearm.
The suspect was placed under arrest and charged with multiple crimes, including unlawful possession of a weapon and giving a false report to a police officer.
If the suspect is convicted on the gun crime charges, he could potentially be sentenced to several years behind bars in New Jersey State Prison. That s because NJ has some of the toughest weapons offense laws in the entire country.
