Armed Robbery Suspect Shot and Killed by Newark Police Officer

A man was left dead yesterday afternoon after he robbed the Twin City Supermarket on the 600 block of Broadway in Newark. His identity is being withheld pending notification to his family.

According to authorities, the Newark police officer, whose identity is also being withheld, apparently arrived at the supermarket (where he works a second job as a security guard) at approximately 2:45pm and found the suspect, who had just robbed the owner of the supermarket at gunpoint. He ordered the suspect to drop his weapon, but the suspect drew it on the officer instead. The officer fired one shot, striking the man in the upper body.

The suspect fled from the scene and ran two blocks before collapsing in a yard on Lincoln Avenue. He was later pronounced dead at University Hospital.

The officer is a 10-year veteran of the Newark Police Department, according to Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Chief of Detectives, Anthony Ambrose.

This was the second police shooting in northern New Jersey this weekend that left a man dead.
