An alleged member of the Bloods street gang has been charged with breaking a corrections officer’s hand at the Passaic County Jail in Paterson, New Jersey.
23-year-old Paterson resident Jahvon Parker had been arrested on drug distribution charges and weapons charges. While he was being processed by authorities, Mr. Parker allegedly became disruptive. Authorities said that Mr. Parker threatened a corrections officer and attempted to assault him.
Jail officials were able to subdue Mr. Parker with pepper spray. According to officials, Mr. Parker put up a great deal of resistance.
Prosecutors are expected to file additional criminal charges against Mr. Parker for the incident at the jail. The new charges will be in addition to the earlier charges, which include possession of drugs with the intent to distribute in a school zone, unlawful possession of a handgun, and receiving stolen property.
In New Jersey, aggravated assault on a police officer is governed by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b). As set forth by the statute, aggravated assault on a police officer may be classified as a third degree felony. If Mr. Parker is convicted of third degree aggravated assault, he could be sentenced to up to five (5) years in New Jersey State Prison.
Mr. Parker was being held at the Passaic County Jail in lieu of $75,000.00 bail.
