Paterson will soon see a significant change in police protocol, as officials recently announced a new initiative which will require all Paterson police officers to wear body cameras while on duty. On the heels of devastating incidents between police and civialians across the country, this initiative, which will be launched as a coordinated effort with Newark and Jersey City, is set to begin this summer.
The mayors of Newark, Paterson, and Jersey City issued a press release to announce the joint initiative, the cost of which remains undisclosed. Apparently, all officers who are uniformed and on-duty will be expected to wear the cameras, which will reportedly document both audio and video interactions between police officers and civilians.
This technology is intended to protect the interests of both citizens and law enforcement, with the potential to document police misconduct as well as criminal behavior. According to the press release, the initiative is considered, an important step toward increasing accountability, improving police work, and enhancing community relations. For instance, a person accused of aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, obstructing the administration of the law, or hindering apprehension may have evidence to prove that he or she was in fact, acting in self-defense.
On the other hand, the implementation of cameras may serve as a useful asset to the State as it seeks to prosecute alleged offenders. Defendants in a wide variety of cases may be presented with audio or visual evidence to support the contention that they committed a crime.
