Woman Charged with Theft After Scamming Senior Citizens

According to the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, a woman was arrested for targeting elderly people in a telephone scam. On Wednesday, police arrested 40 year-old Greisy Breton of Cherry Hill. Breton allegedly contacted victims via telephone and told the victims that a relative was in trouble and needed bail money for release from jail. Breton is accused in one instance, of persuading a senior citizen in Texas to wire $6,200 into a bank account in Paterson controlled by Breton. The state of New Jersey takes theft charges seriously and penalties can be severe. 

A crime of the Second Degree is punishable by a term of incarceration between 5 and 10 years in New Jersey State Prison;

Theft constitutes a crime of the Third Degree punishable by a term of incarceration between 3 and 5 years in New Jersey State Prison if:

  1. The amount involved exceeds $500 but is less than $75,000;
  2. The property stolen is a firearm, motor vehicle, vessel, boat, horse, domestic companion animal or airplane;
  3. The property stolen is a CDS and the amount involved is less than $75,000 or is undetermined and the quantity is one kilogram or less;
  4. It is from the person of the victim; or
  5. The property stolen is a New Jersey Prescription Blank.

A crime of the Fourth Degree is punishable by a term of incarceration up to 18 months in New Jersey State Prison (if the amount involved is at least $200 by does not exceed $500.)

Otherwise, theft constitutes a Disorderly Persons Offense punishable by a term of incarceration up to 6 months in the county jail.
