Paterson New Jersey police are searching for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a man at a local gas station.
The victim was shot and killed a short time before 6:00 p.m. at a gas station located on Route 20 and 1st Avenue in Paterson, NJ. The Paterson Police Department received a report of gunshots being fired in the area and immediately dispatched police officers to the scene. Additionally, the Hawthorne Police Department also sent cops to the scene to offer assistance.
When Paterson NJ cops arrived at the gas station, they found the victim lying on the ground and suffering from a serious gunshot wound. Emergency medical crews rushed the victim to nearby St. Joseph s Regional Medical Center, where doctors tried valiantly to save his life. Tragically, doctors at the Paterson hospital were unable to save the victim; he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Paterson Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale said that Paterson NJ detectives are actively investigating the homicide and attempting to determine the identity of the shooter. At this time, authorities have not released the identity of the victim because officials still need to notify his family.
If police are able to identify the culprit, it is possible that the shooter would face criminal charges for first degree murder. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious crime in the New Jersey Criminal Code. While most first degree felonies in NJ carry a maximum punishment of 20 years behind bars, a conviction for first degree murder can result in life imprisonment.
Any members of the public with information about the homicide are asked to contact Paterson detectives at 973-321-1120.
