Police in Paterson New Jersey are investigating the recent shooting death of a local man on a city street.
The tragic incident occurred on a Friday night. According to law enforcement, the 64-year-old victim was walking along the 100 block of Ellison Street in Paterson NJ when he was fatally shot.
The identity of the shooting victim was not initially released by authorities. Authorities did say that the victim resided in Paterson, New Jersey. Officials later said that the victim was Jose Tavarez, a 64-year-old male in contrast to initial reports that indicated the victim was a 39-year-old male.
After the victim was pronounced dead, Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale issued a statement. Speziale noted that this was the second homicide in Paterson NJ so far this year.
The Passaic County Prosecutor s Office and the Paterson Police Department are actively investigating this recent homicide. At this time, law enforcement has not identified a suspect in the case.
If investigators do eventually identify and apprehend a suspect, it is likely that criminal charges for murder would follow. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3, murder is the most serious crime in the New Jersey Criminal Code. A conviction on first degree murder charges could result in a sentence of life imprisonment in NJ State Prison, with a minimum mandatory term of incarceration of 30 years.
