Paterson NJ police are investigating a shooting at a city residence that left a man in critical condition.
The shooting occurred during the early morning hours. According to Paterson NJ officials, the victim was visiting a home located on the 200 block of Governor Street in Paterson, New Jersey.
The Paterson Police Department received reports of a shooting and quickly dispatched police officers to the area. When officers arrived at the scene of the shooting, they came across the victim inside the home.
The victim, a 42-year-old man from Teaneck, NJ, had sustained a gunshot wound to the hip area. He was rushed to St. Joseph s Regional Medical Center, where doctors treated him for his injuries. After being treated at the hospital, the victim was listed in critical condition.
Paterson NJ police are actively investigating the shooting. Detectives are said to be interviewing witnesses and searching the neighborhood as part of the investigation.
If police can eventually identify and apprehend a suspect in the shooting, the offender would likely face significant criminal penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), a person who commits an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon such as a handgun or a knife can be charged with a second degree felony. A conviction on second degree aggravated assault charges could lead to a sentence of 5-10 years in New Jersey State Prison.
