A Paterson NJ man has been charged with the sexual assault of an underage girl.
According to the Passaic County Prosecutor s Office, the suspect victimized a 10-year-old girl in Paterson, New Jersey.
When authorities became aware of the allegations against the suspect, they opened an investigation. Detectives with the Passaic County Prosecutor s Office Special Victims Unit spoke with the victim and determined that enough evidence existed to arrest the suspect.
Additionally, the investigation turned up evidence that the suspect allegedly showed pornographic videos to a 12-year-old boy. He reportedly did this on at least two occasions.
The suspect is a 33-year-old man who resides in Paterson, New Jersey. He has been charged with numerous sex crimes, including sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
The suspect has already made an appearance in Passaic County Superior Court in Paterson NJ. The next step in the criminal case will be a grand jury convening to determine whether the suspect should be indicted on the very serious sexual offense charges.
If the suspect is indicted and ultimately convicted of sexual assault, he faces severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2(b) and N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2(c), sexual assault is typically classified as a second degree felony. This means that the suspect could be sentenced to 5-10 years in New Jersey State Prison if he is convicted. Additionally, the suspect would be required to register as a sex offender under Megan s Law.
After being placed under arrest and processed in this case, the suspect was remanded to the Passaic County Jail. He was being held at the correctional facility in lieu of $300,000 bail, with no 10-percent cash bail option.
