A 36-year old East Orange man was arrested and charged last night after he purportedly shot an off-duty police officer during an altercation at a local convenience store.
Shaahid Forshee was taken into custody in Newark hours after the alleged shooting. The officer, who was allegedly unarmed, was attempting to break up a fight between Forshee and another man. According to the article published by NJ.com and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the officer “narrowly escaped serious injury when a bullet grazed his head.” He was taken to University Hospital in Newark and is believed to be in stable condition.
Forshee and the other man fled the scene. Following his apprehension, Forshee was charged with Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, and associated weapons offenses. He is currently lodged in the Essex County Correctional Facility.
If convicted of Attempted Murder, a crime of the First Degree, Forshee faces between 10-20 years in NJ State Prison, with a requirement that he serve 85% of any sentence imposed before becoming eligible for parole, as per NERA (No Early Release Act for violent offenses).
