Paterson police arrested a teenager who allegedly shot a police officer on a city street.
The shooting incident happened during the early morning hours. According to law enforcement officials, the 16-year-old suspect attempted to rob a man near the intersection of Carroll Street and Park Street in Paterson, New Jersey.
When a Paterson police officer arrived at the scene, the suspect allegedly used a handgun to fire gunshots at the cop. The cop reportedly responded by shooting the juvenile suspect.
Since the suspect is a juvenile, authorities have not released much information about him. The Passaic County Prosecutor s Office issued a press release and noted that the suspect s case will be dealt with in the Passaic County Superior Court, Family Division.
The underage suspect has been charged with the juvenile crime of delinquency. Passaic County prosecutors indicated that the minor would have faced more serious charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and drug crimes if he was an adult.
The Paterson cop who was involved in the shooting is currently being investigated by internal affairs, which is standard procedure anytime a police officer discharges their weapon.
