Last month, a U.S. District Court Judge sentenced an 81-year-old Fair Lawn man to five (5) years in prison for downloading images and videos of children being sexually abused.
The sentence was handed down in federal court in Newark. Additionally, Joseph Amari was ordered to undergo an additional five (5) years of supervised release.
Mr. Amari admitted to receiving images and videos of children being sexually abused. Mr. Amari told the court that, in February 2007, he used peer-to-peer file-sharing software to download the images.
When he was sentenced, Mr. Amari was already serving time in New Jersey State Prison forchild endangerment. Mr. Amari’s federal sentence will run concurrent with his state prison term.
When he is released from prison, Mr. Amari will be required to register as a sex offender.
Under the terms of his sentence, Mr. Amari will initially remain in New Jersey State Prison. If he is granted parole on his child endangerment sentence, Mr. Amari will then be transferred to federal custody to serve the remainder of his federal sentence.
