Earlier this month, a 35-year-old man was shot and killed in East Orange, New Jersey.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, East Orange NJ resident Victor Rivera was killed in the early morning hours. Police believe that Mr. Rivera was involved in a dispute just before the shooting on North 21st Street.
After being shot, Mr. Rivera was transferred to University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
In New Jersey, murder is the most serious offense in the state’s criminal code. N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3 classifies criminal homicide as a first degree crime. If Mr. Rivera’s killer is apprehended and convicted of first degree felony murder, he could be sentenced to life in New Jersey State Prison.
According to police, the investigation into the shooting is ongoing. East Orange police have asked that anyone with information about the incident call the East Orange Violent Crimes Task Force at (973) 266-5060.
