The Dumont Police Department is seeking information on a man accused of assaulting and groping a female pedestrian as she walked on East Madison Avenue near its intersection with Thompson Street.
According to police, last week a small-statured Hispanic man approached and groped a woman late at night as she walked on the street. After the alleged assault, the man quickly fled on foot down East Madison Avenue.
Witnesses at the scene described the assailant as standing between 5-foot-6 and 5-foot-8. According to the witnesses, he was wearing a tight black shirt, dark-colored pants, and a New Jersey Devils hat.
If the assailant is apprehended, he could be charged with criminal sexual contact. In New Jersey, criminal sexual is addressed by N.J.S.A. 2C:14-3b. The statute classifies criminal sexual contact as a fourth degree felony. This means that if convicted, the assailant could be sentenced to as many as 18 months in state prison.
The Dumont Detective Bureau is requesting that anyone with information about this incident contact the bureau at (201) 387-5000.
