As reported on NJ.com, a Clifton man was shot in the back as he tried to speed away from two assailants on a street in the Third Ward, the city’s third shooting Wednesday, police said.
Patrol officers found the wounded 26-year-old man sitting in a car at a strip mall at East 35th Street and Route 20 around 9:30 p.m., according to Detective Lt. Patrick Murray, head of the Ceasefire Unit.
The victim was driving on Grimes Place with another unidentified person when two men started chasing them and trying to get the car to stop, Murray said in a statement, citing a preliminary investigation. At least one of the pursuers had a gun.
“As the victim pulled off, they heard several gunshots fired, at which time a bullet entered the vehicle and struck the victim in the back,” the lieutenant said.
The injured man stopped at the mall to call for help, Murray added. He was listed in stable condition at St. Joseph’s Medical Center early today.
Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call Ceasefire Unit Detectives Edgar Taylor or Detective Christopher Ravallese at 973-321-1342.
