Two shooting occurred in Newark, New Jersey on the night of Tuesday, December 17th, leaving one dead and raising questions as to whether the two incidents were connected.
According to chief assistant Essex County prosecutor Tom Fennelly, Newark resident, 29-year-old Kason K. Williams, was shot several times on the 800-block of South 16th Street in Newark’s South Ward at approximately 9:32 p.m on December 17th. He was subsequently taken to University Hospital for treatment but was declared deceased shortly thereafter at 10:10 p.m.
Approximately one hour following the Williams shooting, yet another shooting occurred on Bergen Street in Newark, which is located nearly one mile from where the first shooting took place. Detectives from the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Major Crimes Task Force are currently investigating the shootings, searching for a correlation between the two crimes. It remains to be seen whether officials determine that these were isolated events or related incidents.
Homicide (Murder) in New Jersey is codified under N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3 and is considered a crime of the first degree, which is the most egregious offense under the New Jersey Criminal Code. Typically, a crime of the first degree is punishable by a term of incarceration ranging from 10 to 20 years in New Jersey State Prison.
However, a person convicted of homicide is subject to more severe penalties, specifically between 30 years and life imprisonment, with a minimum of 30 years that must be served before the person is eligible for parole. Additionally, certain homicide offenses are subject tosentencing to a term of incarceration served at a maximum security prison.
