The main suspect in the possible shoplifting of a general store in Union City NJ allegedly fled from the scene before police could speak with him.
Earlier this month, an employee of the general store at 2216 Kennedy Boulevard saw a man exit the store with a Dunkin’ Donuts bag and a Victoria’s Secret bag. Since the man had entered the store without the bags, the employee became suspicious.
The store employee contacted police to notify them of a possible shoplifting. Unfortunately, before police could arrive at the scene, the suspect fled south down Kennedy Boulevard.
The employee described the suspect as a man standing 5-foot-six with a fair complexion and a scruffy beard. According to the witness, the suspect was wearing a gray-hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.
In New Jersey, shoplifting is governed under N.J.S.A. 2C:20-11. Shoplifting can be classified as either a felony or a disorderly persons offense, depending on the value of the items stolen. In this case, if the suspect is apprehended and convicted of third degree shoplifting, he could be looking at a sentence of up to five (5) years in NJ State Prison.
