East Orange NJ police are investigating a substitute teacher at East Orange Campus High who has been accused of assaulting a 16-year-old student.
According to authorities, an unidentified male student was taken to a classroom that was being used for in-school suspension students. 54-year-old East Orange resident Charles Hall was allegedly overseeing the classroom when the incident took place.
After the incident, the injured student was taken by security guards to a local hospital, where he was treated.
Mr. Hall was a 25-year veteran of the East Orange Police Department. He had recently retired as a lieutenant.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and East Orange police are currently looking into the matter.
Meanwhile, Mr. Hall has been charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
In New Jersey, aggravated assault is addressed by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b). According to the statute, a person can be charged with third degree aggravated assault if he purposely or knowingly causes significant bodily injury. If Mr. Hall is convicted of third degree aggravated assault, he could face up to five (5) years in NJ State Prison.
Mr. Hall was released from custody after posting $50,000 bail.
