Two (2) Port Authority officers were injured by a Clifton NJ man driving near the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City, New Jersey.
According to authorities, 25-year-old Khalid Abdulla was driving a 2008 Honda Civic when he was pulled over by police while approaching the Holland Tunnel toll lanes on 12th Street near Marin Boulevard. A Port Authority officer, who was on foot, was struck by Mr. Abdulla’s vehicle.
After hitting the officer, Mr. Abdulla continued eastbound toward the tunnel. When Mr. Abdulla then got stuck in traffic, he struck another vehicle.
Mr. Abdulla was pulled over again by police. This time, Mr. Abdulla allegedly struck another Port Authority officer in the upper body.
Mr. Abdulla was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding by motor vehicle, resisting arrest, and reckless driving.
In New Jersey, aggravated assault on a police officer is addressed by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b). As set forth by the statute, aggravated assault on a police officer can be classified as a third degree felony. If convicted of third degree aggravated assault, Mr. Abdulla could be sentenced to as many as five (5) years in New Jersey State Prison.
After being hit, both Port Authority officers were taken to the Jersey City Medical Center and treated for minor injuries.
