Paterson NJ police recently busted an “open-air drug market” in the city’s Fourth Ward.
During the bust, police arrested 24-year-old Paterson resident Raymarr Tann. Mr. Tann was getting into his car at the corner of 12th Avenue and East 22nd Street when police detained him.
Police arrived at the scene in response to complaints filed by area residents. The residents had complained about drug activity in the area.
When he was arrested, Mr. Tann had 514 glassine packets of heroin, 47 baggies of crack, and nine (9) bags of marijuana. Police estimated the street value of the drugs at approximately $6,500.00.
Police also arrested 18-year-old Hamburg NJ resident Brandon Cole. According to police, Mr. Cole bought 50 packets of heroin from Mr. Tann.
Mr. Tann was charged with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to distribute, and possession with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school.
In New Jersey, the criminal charge for possession of heroin with intent to distribute is addressed by N.J.S.A. 2C:35-5. As set forth by the statute, intent to distribute more than five (5) ounces of heroin is a first degree felony. If Mr. Tann is convicted of first degree heroin distribution, he could be sentenced to as many as 20 years in New Jersey State Prison. And because he is charged with intent to distribute heroin near a school, he could face additional penalties under N.J.S.A. 2C:35-7.
