Two (2) men have been charged in separate incidents in Newark NJ involving guns and drugs.
When Newark NJ police stopped a taxi for a motor vehicle violation near the 200 block of Chancellor Avenue, they found Newark resident Haneef Sanders riding in the taxi. As officers approached the cab, they saw Mr. Sanders allegedly trying to hide a loaded .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol.
After taking Mr. Sanders into custody, the officers allegedly found a number of small zip lock bags of cocaine and several other bags heroin in Mr. Sanders’ possession.
Mr. Sanders was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and certain persons offenses. Mr. Sanders also faces drug charges, including possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), distributing drugs on school property, and distributing a CDS.
That same day, Newark NJ police officers also arrested 24-year-old Kwasi Mack after they allegedly saw him remove a Ruger 9mm handgun from his waistband and drop it to the ground.
At the time, Mr. Mack was being monitored by an electronic bracelet because he is a convicted felon.
Mr. Mack was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, certain persons offenses, obstructing the administration of law, and resisting arrest.
In New Jersey unlawful possession of a handgun is addressed by N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5(b). If either Mr. Sanders or Mr. Mack is convicted of second degree unlawful possession of a handgun, they could face as many as ten (10) years in New Jersey State Prison.
