Officers from the Fair Lawn Police Department were called to respond to a law firm on Plaza Road earlier this week on the report of an injured man.
The ensuing investigation revealed that Mohammad Ramadan, a 34-year old Rochelle Park resident, had attacked an elderly man at the firm with a wooden baton, causing serious injuries. The elderly man, whose identity has not yet been released, was taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was treated for head injuries. His prognosis is unknown.
Ramadan was ultimately arrested and charged with Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, and associated weapons offenses. No motive was announced. For more information, the NJ.com article can be found here.
In order for a person to be convicted of Attempted Murder, a crime of the First Degree, the State must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that it was their intention to cause the death of another person. If convicted, the person then faces a prison term between 10 and 20 years, with a requirement that 85% of the sentence be served without parole, as per the No Early Release Act (“NERA“) for violent offenders. A sentence of that magnitude can be life-altering.
