Masked Suspect Arrested After Stealing Gas & Running from Paramus Police

According to police, a man was arrested in Paramus after allegedly stealing gas from a Route 17 Exxon station at around 3:00am on Tuesday. Police first received the call about the suspects were masked and driving a Range Rover. They then received another call that two occupants from a similar vehicle were walking through residents’ driveways on Highland Ave. Officer William Stallone came across the Range Rover which was allegedly parked with a masked occupant behind the wheel. Two other masked suspects returned to the vehicle. One suspect got in and drove away and another one took off running. Eventually, police caught up with 26 year-old Jaquil Spruill of Newark who was captured by Bergen County Sheriff’s Officer Lorenc and K-9 Harry tracked him down. Eluding is codified under N.J.S.A. 2C:29-2b, which provides:

b. Eluding. Any person, while operating a motor vehicle on any street or highway in this State or any vessel on the waters of this State, who knowingly flees or attempts to elude any police or law enforcement officer after having received any signal from such officer to bring the vehicle or vessel to a full stop commits a crime of the third degree; except that, a person is guilty of a crime of the second degree if the flight or attempt to elude creates a risk of death or injury to any person.

A crime of the second degree is punishable by a term of imprisonment of between 5 and 10 years in New Jersey State Prison.

A crime of the third degree is punishable by a term of imprisonment of up to 5 years in New Jersey State Prison.

*In addition to the above penalties, an Eluding conviction also carries with it a mandatory license suspension for a period of between 6 months and 2 years.
