Police are currently investigating a fatal shooting on a street in Paterson, New Jersey.
The shooting went down around 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of Hamilton Avenue and Summer Street in Paterson, NJ. The Paterson Police Department received a report of gunshots being fired in the area and immediately dispatched cops to the scene.
When Paterson NJ officers arrived at the scene of the shooting, they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency medical responders briefly treated the victim and then rushed him to nearby St. Joseph s Regional Medical Center so that doctors could provide emergency medical treatment. Tragically, physicians at the Paterson hospital were unable to save the victim; he was pronounced dead less than 40 minutes after being shot.
The victim lived in Paterson, NJ. He was just 21 years old when he died.
The Passaic County Prosecutor s Office and the Paterson Police Department are conducting a joint investigation into the homicide. At this time, law enforcement has not been able to identify a suspect in the shooting.
If Paterson investigators can eventually determine the identity of the shooter, that individual would probably face criminal charges for murder and various weapons offenses. As set forth by the NJ Criminal Code, murder is a first degree felony and carries a potential punishment of life imprisonment in New Jersey State Prison. Moreover, there is a minimum mandatory term of incarceration of 30 years behind bars for anyone convicted of first degree murder.
