Police in Clifton NJ are trying to locate four suspects who allegedly committed a carjacking and robbery.
According to law enforcement, the suspects committed the theft offenses a short time after 9:30 p.m. on the 100 block of Highland Avenue in Clifton, New Jersey. The driver parked his car on the side of the road and was immediately approached by four men.
Two of the suspects reportedly brandished handguns as they ordered the vehicle driver and three passengers to exit the car. The victims included a man from New York, two men from Passaic, and two women from Passaic NJ. Additionally, an infant child was inside the vehicle at the time of the carjacking.
After the victims got out of the car, one of them was reportedly robbed of her jewelry.
The four suspects then got inside the car and drove away. They were last seen fleeing the scene and heading down Highland Avenue in Clifton NJ.
Thankfully, none of the victims suffered any injuries during the frightening incident.
Detectives with the Clifton Police Department are actively investigating the carjacking. At this time, law enforcement has not been able to identify any of the suspects.
The suspects have been described as four Hispanic males who are all in their 20s.
If Clifton police can eventually identify and capture the carjacking suspects, the culprits would likely be subject to significant criminal penalties. That s because N.J.S.A. 2C:15-2 classifies carjacking as a first degree felony. Moreover, while most first degree crimes in New Jersey carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in NJ State Prison, carjacking is punishable by up to 30 years behind bars.
