Wayne New Jersey police arrested two men who were allegedly passing counterfeit money at local businesses.
According to law enforcement, the suspects used counterfeit cash to make purchases at several stores in Wayne, NJ.
The first reported incident occurred at the Walgreens in the Valley Brook Shopping Center in Wayne, NJ. Store employees contacted local police after two males bought items using fake $100 bills. When Wayne police officers got to the store, they learned that the suspects had also used counterfeit cash at two other businesses in the area.
Sometime that same evening, Wayne police got another call about fake cash being used at a business located on Valley Road. Police officers investigated and found the suspects inside a nearby liquor store. One of the police officers recognized a suspect from an earlier incident because he had handled a case in which the suspect was charged with disorderly conduct.
The two suspects, an 18-year-old man from Orange NJ and a 19-year-old man from Orange NJ, were subsequently arrested and charged with forgery.
If the suspects are convicted on the forgery charges, they face significant penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:21-1, anyone who alters money can be charged with a third degree felony. A conviction for third degree forgery could lead to a sentence of 3-5 years in NJ State Prison.
After being arrested and charged, the suspects were taken to the Passaic County Jail. They were each being held at the jail in lieu of separate $20K bail amounts.
