In an ongoing case involving a Paterson man who was originally charged with aggravated manslaughter in connection with the fatal stabbing of his roommate’s boyfriend, the defendant was recently sentenced to eight years in New Jersey State Prison after accepting a plea offer from the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.
36-year-old Paterson resident Samar Davis pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of reckless manslaughter, admitting to the unfortunate events that led to the death of his roommate’s boyfriend during an argument that turned into a physical altercation. The incident occurred at Davis’ residence on 12th Avenue on July 8, 2013, after which he fled the scene and continuously evaded authorities.
The victim, 50-year-old Keith Anderson, died from the stab wounds inflicted by Davis when the argument turned deadly. Davis ultimately turned himself over to authorities in March of 2014. He was then charged with aggravated manslaughter, which entails a term of incarceration of up to 30 years.
Per the terms of his plea agreement, Davis must serve almost 7 years of his 8-year sentence before becoming eligible for parole. Considering the alternative sentence which may have been imposed if he took his case to trial and was convicted of aggravated manslaughter, this is a much more favorable outcome.
