Passaic County Sheriff’s Officers Arrest Two After Alleged Drug Transaction

Officials from the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office recently announced the arrest of an alleged drug distributor, as well as an alleged potential buyer, after a suspected drug transaction that occurred in Paterson this weekend.

According to Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Berdnik, investigators were conducting a narcotics surveillance operation at approximately 9:45 p.m. on Friday, May 1st when they observed what they believed to be a drug transaction between 25-year-old Guttenberg resident Nicholas Bonavita and Corby Jackson.

The incident, which occurred in the vicinity of East 16th Street and 8th Avenue, was reportedly a hand-to-hand transaction, exchanging drugs, specifically in the form of heroin, for cash. The two men fled the scene following the interaction; however, both were stopped by police shortly thereafter.

Bonavita was then discovered in possession of 15 packets of heroin, bearing the moniker Exit 59. Jackson, on the other hand, was found with $3,200 on his person. A subsequent search executed at Jackson’s residence resulted in the seizure of 140 packets of heroin, also marked Exit 59.

Bonavita is now facing charges for possession of heroin, while Jackson has been charged with heroin distribution. Both of these charges are extremely serious, classified as indictable felonies under New Jersey law. Fortunately, the State does provide an attractive alternative for first-time offenders who are charged with certain drug offenses.

The Pre-trial Intervention Program is a desirable option for eligible applicants, as it allows them to complete a probationary period after which the charges against them are dismissed. If you have been charged with an indictable felony, understanding all of the avenues they may be available to you is critical.
