Man Arrested After Allegedly Claiming the Life of Young Paterson Basketball Star

After a tragic fatal shooting claimed the life of a 15-year-old Paterson basketball star, law enforcement officials have identified the man whom they believe is responsible. 20-year-old Gregory Oliver is now facing charges for murder (homicide), attempted murder, and weapons offenses, which may entail a life-long prison sentence if he is ultimately found guilty.

15-year-old local resident Armoni Sexton, a student and talented member of the varsity basketball team at the Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology, was killed in a fatal drive-by shooting that occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 18th. Sexton was gathered with a few of his friends near the corner liquor store at 230 Rosa Parks Boulevard in Paterson s Fourth Ward before the devastating turn of events.

Multiple shots were reportedly fired from a vehicle passing by, one of which inflicted fatal injuries on the rising basketball star. Three other victims were also injured when the incident transpired, all of whom are expected to make full recoveries. Following a police investigation, 20-year-old local resident Gregory Oliver was taken into custody.

There has been speculation that this shooting was retaliatory in nature, meant as a response to a recent shooting in the city s First Ward. However, authorities have yet to disclose the alleged motive and whether or not they believe that Sexton was the target or simply collateral damage.

Although the reasons behind the shooting remain unknown, one thing is for certain: Gregory Oliver will be subject to severe punishments if convicted. Among the crimes for which he is accused, the murder charge alone could result in a life-long prison sentence, with a minimum of 30 years to be served before he becomes eligible for parole.

With the devastation voiced by members of the Paterson community, it is likely that public sentiment will drive a vigorous prosecution. Further, if Oliver is ultimately found guilty in this case, local residents will likely expect him to be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
