In a story found on NJ.com, Paramus police stated, a Hopatcong woman intentionally hurt herself and lied about being robbed in an attempt to conceal her theft of hundreds in cash from a local business.
Lola Brock, 44, called police Tuesday morning and said she’d been robbed in the parking garage at the Shops of Bergen Town Center. She told police she had earlier stopped at a Rockaway bank and withdrew $800 to be used by Opinions, a public survey firm where Brock works.
While in the garage, Brock reportedly claimed two men in ski masks approached her, grabbed her purse and threw her to the ground, knocking her unconscious and causing a cut to her head seen by police. Brock claimed that when she came to, the $800 plus another $900 from a paycheck Brock had just cashed as well as Brock’s car keys were gone.
But police began to grow suspicious upon investigating the incident, noticing discrepancies in Brock’s account after reviewing surveillance video. Police returned to Hackensack University Medical Center, where Brock had been treated, and brought her to police headquarters for a second interview.
Following additional questioning, she allegedly told Det. Keith Dimascio she had staged the incident, including her injury. The $800 was found in Brock’s van and her keys were found at the scene, police said.
Brock has been charged with theft and making a false report to law enforcement. She was released on $1,500 bail.
