1 Fatality and 2 Injured in what police believe to be attempted robbery in Passaic, NJ

In Passaic a 31-year-old city resident was fatally shot early Sunday morning. Authorities believe he was the victim of an armed robbery attempt.

Detective Andrew White, said Alejandro Leal was standing in front of a Hope Avenue house at about 3:15 a.m. on Sunday with two friends when a gunman opened fire during an apparent robbery gone wrong. Leal, was shot in the neck and arm, and pronounced dead at St. Mary’s hospital, White said.

Fernando Ponce, 27, of Passaic, and Clifton’s Lorenzo Cantu, 28, were also wounded in the shooting and taken to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Paterson, White said.

They have a person of interest who has been identified, but no arrests have yet been made, White said. Detectives at this point do not believe the shooting was related to any prior incidents, White said.
