As a follow-up to a recent post concerning an assault and robbery that occurred at a Newark, New Jersey hotel, authorities have arrested two suspects in connection with the incident.
The Newark Police Department launched an investigation after a Harrison man went to the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark at approximately 5 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15th after arranging to meet a female escort, at which time he was ambushed by a group of assailants.
Per reports, the victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was assaulted and robbed by at least five men, one of whom was posing as a police officer. He sustained a cerebral hemorrhage as a result of the assault but was reportedly likely to recover. The property stolen during the crime included the man’s phone and his vehicle, both of which were later recovered, as well as his wallet.
In the most recent development concerning this case, Sergeant Ronald Glover, a spokesperson for the Newark Police Department, announced the arrests of two individuals whom authorities believe participated in the assault and robbery. According to Glover, 20-year-old Newark resident Jessica McNeil and 28-year-old Roselle resident Carson Burton were both arrested on Tuesday, January 21st.
McNeil, who police believe acted as the victim’s potential escort, is now facing charges for robbery and conspiracy, while Burton has been charged with robbery, conspiracy, and aggravated assault.
The charges brought against those arrested are extremely serious and could result in significant penalties if they are ultimately convicted. Robbery offenses are governed under N.J.S.A. 2C:15-1 and can be classified as crimes of the first or second degree.
In addition, N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2 governs conspiracy offenses. This statute specifies that a conspiracy to commit a crime of the first degree is a crime of the second degree, unless the crime committed is one of murder or terrorism. Otherwise, conspiracy is a crime of the same degree as the most serious crime which is the object of the conspiracy.
In this case, if McNeil and Burton are found guilty of the robbery and conspiracy charges, they could be facing terms of imprisonment ranging from 5 to 10 years in New Jersey State Prison for each charge. The court will ultimately determine whether these sentences are to be served concurrently or consecutively.
