A Newark NJ police officer shot a suspect in the leg after the man allegedly pointed a gun at the officer.
According to police, several officers were attempting to arrest 38-year-old Alsurquan Richardson for a drug offense near Ludlow Street and Wharton Street in Newark NJ. When Mr. Richardson fled on foot, the officers pursued him.
Police said that, at some point during the pursuit, Mr. Richardson spun around and pointed a .40-caliber Taurus handgun at the officers, prompting one of the officers to shoot Mr. Richardson in the leg.
Police officials indicated that the shooting will be investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, as is standard procedure.
Mr. Richardson is expected to survive his gunshot wound.
