Earlier this month, Jersey City NJ police recovered a loaded .357 magnum from a backyard and arrested a man for illegal weapons possession.
Police arrested 22-year-old Shurquan Sweet after recovering the gun in the backyard on Congress Street near Sherman Avenue. Officers arrived at the scene after receiving a report from someone who saw the gun in the backyard.
After an investigation, officers were able to place Mr. Sweet at the scene when the gun was discarded.
Sometime later, officers found suspected drugs in the backyard as well. Police allegedly recovered 21 grams of marijuana and 44 grams of Ecstasy.
Mr. Sweet has been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, receiving stolen property, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and possession of Ecstasy with intent to distribute.
In New Jersey, unlawful possession of a handgun is governed under N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5(b). If Mr. Sweet is convicted of second degree unlawful possession of a handgun, he could be sentenced to as many as 10 years in NJ State Prison.
