On Sunday, May 19th, I wrote a blog article entitled, “Hudson County Investigators Seek Witnesses in Case of 12-Year Old Jersey City Boy Shot and Killed.” The article detailed the efforts being taken by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office to identify those responsible for the shooting death of 12-year old Gwyan Levine, Jr. (pictured left), who was viciously gunned down on a Jersey City sidewalk as he was walking home from playing basketball with his father, Gwyan Levine, Sr., in the early evening hours of Friday, May 17th.
Thereafter, on Thursday, May 23rd, I wrote an update entitled, “Charges Filed in Shooting Death of 12-Year old Jersey City Boy.” That article advised that Janice Everett, a 25-year old woman from Rahway, had been arrested and charged in connection with the murder. It further advised that the motive for the murder appeared to have been a robbery, and that two men were also believed to have been involved. Detailed descriptions of the two men were provided by witnesses and released to the public shortly after the shooting.
Jersey City Murder Shawn Harris Authorities have now confirmed that Shawn Harris, a 33-year old man from Irvington (pictured above), was arrested and charged yesterday with Felony Murder, Armed Robbery, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, and Certain Persons Not to Possess Weapons. (This last charge is based entirely on Harris’ criminal history. Apparently, he has at least one conviction for a violent offense, which has led to him being characterized as a “certain person not to possess weapons” under the law. Notably, a conviction for this charge alone would subject Harris to a minimum of 5 years in New Jersey State Prison without the eligibility of parole.)
Harris is being held at the Hudson County jail in Kearny in lieu of $700,000 cash only bail. He is expected to make his first appearance at the Hudson County Superior Court this afternoon.
Harris was apparently taken into custody at the Essex County Probation Office in East Orange. At the time of he arrest, he had outstanding warrants for his arrest out of Essex County and Belleville Municipal Court. Harris is believed to be Everett’s boyfriend. Harris is also believed to be responsible for at least one prior robbery that evening.
The third male is still at large and authorities at still asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, Homicide Unit at (201) 915-1345. All inquiries will be kept confidential.
