On December 31st, the partially-clothed body of a 24-year old man was found by a passer-by behind the Getty station on Tonnelle Avenue (near the ramp to Route 3) in Hudson County. Officers from the North Bergen Police Department responded and discovered the man on the ground with his hand bound behind his back. He was later identified as Darryl Williams of Essex County.
Thereafter, the victim’s girlfriend, 23-year old Latoya Mozee of Newark, was charged with hismurder. Police believe that Mozee and the victim were involved in an altercation sometime on December 30th/31st that culminated in Mozee assaulting and binding the victim and transporting him from Newark to the North Bergen lot, where it appears he was left to die. She later fled to North Carolina.
After an extensive investigation, including crime scene forensics, an Arrest Warrant was issued for Mozee. Acting on a tip, officers arrested Mozee on January 17th at a Denny’s in Raleigh, North Carolina. She remains incarcerated in North Carolina, but has waived extradition. It is expected that she will be returned to Hudson County to face the murder charges later this week. For more information, see the Jersey Journal article entitled, “Girlfriend charged with murder of man tied up and left to die in North Bergen lot.”
It appears, based on the initial investigation, that this murder was the result of a domestic violence incident and will be handled accordingly. If convicted of murder, the most serious crime in the State of New Jersey, Mozee will face a sentence of 30 years to life imprisonment, with a minimum of 30 years that must be served before she will become eligible for parole.
