Yet another carjacking has occurred in Short Hills, New Jersey, the most recent of which involves a male victim and his Porsche sports utility vehicle.
According to Lieutenant Ron Lipp of the Millburn Township Police Department, the carjacking occurred in the parking lot of the victim’s townhouse, located on the 800 block of Morris Turnpike, at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14th. The offenders reportedly assaulted the victim before stealing his new black Porsche Cayenne, which still displayed the temporary license plates given to new vehicles.
Although the carjackers punched the man in the back of the head, he was not seriously injured. Police obtained a description of the perpetrators and have put out a description of the vehicle, which has yet to be recovered.
This most recent crime comes shortly after the fatal carjacking that occurred in the Short Hills Mall parking lot, claiming the life of a lawyer from Hoboken, New Jersey. Four men have been charged in connection with the Short Hills Mall carjacking and murder, each of whom subsequently pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.
Although the January 14th incident did not result in the significant injury or death of the victim, carjacking is still considered an extremely serious offense under the New Jersey Criminal Code. With that said, if one or more individuals is identified and ultimately convicted on charges related to this crime, they could be subject to severe penalties.
Carjacking is codified under N.J.S.A. 2C:15-2, and is classified as a crime of the first degree. Notably, offenses of this kind are subject to an extended term of imprisonment, ranging from 10 to 30 years, which allows the maximum sentenced imposed to be 10 years longer than those typically imposed for crimes of the first degree.
Further, carjacking is one of the offenses enumerated under the No Early Release Act (“NERA”), which requires those convicted of such crimes to serve 85 percent of the sentence imposed before becoming eligible for parole.
